Deaks (b. 1987) is a British-German contemporary and multidisciplinary artist based in Berlin. Raised in an environment that nurtured his creative expression, his evolving practice blends elements of collage and sculpture.
Deaks‘ primary work offers a curious, often humorous exploration of mundane imagery and materials. By collecting, cutting and rearranging recognisable symbolism, patterns and materials, he creates recast compositions through the careful arrangements of square-shaped pieces.
In doing so, his collages attempt to square the circle, juxtaposing the symmetry of cuts and transitions within the borders of an organic rounded shape. Thus, the collages create and exist within a distinct tension between emerging patterns and deliberate designs. The relationships between the pieces, in colour, shapes and patterns, continue to convey the meditative quality and dedication to detail so characteristic of the creation process.
Through re-contextualising traces of everyday human activity, Deaks breaks away familiar materials and symbols from their original contexts and intended applications. This requires a re-examination of the ordinary, yet familiar, which ultimately reveals new perspectives of layered interpretations. The process of deconstruction and re-assembly invites the viewer to engage with the previously overlooked in the supposedly unremarkable.
Working primarily with salvaged and discarded, often damaged materials, Deaks believes in “re-seeing” through re-assembly of the recognisable. By challenging established patterns and routines of recognition, Deaks’ collages seek to reveal the unseen within the seen.
